Cool? Identity, Drugs and Fitting In, is a fast-paced 23-minute video, developed by and featuring teens. The video explores the complex issues of identity, drugs and fitting in. It looks at how commonly teens use drugs and alcohol, how taking drugs relates to “fitting in”, and the point where taking drugs becomes a problem. The issues are viewed from both a rural and an urban perspective. Youth who have experienced problems as a result of their drug use share their stories. Other teens share their opinions and viewpoints in a very “real way. The accompanying discussion guide provides facilitators with background information, activities and discussion questions.

Faces of Reality. This documentary brings together four young adults who experienced an alcohol or other drug problem in their teens. Their task is to create a television commercial that will carry a message to other youth. In the process of making the commercial, the young people in the video share their personal stories of addiction and recovery. A discussion guide is included which provides teachers and other youth leaders with questions and activities to generate discussion.

Grade 9

Kids have always experimented and pushed the boundaries of what they should and shouldn’t do. They need to prove things to themselves and to their peers – it’s a part of growing up. When tobacco, alcohol, other drugs or gambling is involved, experimentation can become a dangerous progression that may lead to dependency or an addiction. The Teacher Information Series is designed to give teachers like you factual information to help you engage students in talking about substance abuse and gambling and allow them to make informed lifestyle decisions and healthy choices.

School Policy Manual

This manual offers principals, teachers and school councils practical information about developing a substance use and gambling policy. It describes the key components of an effective policy, discusses the benefits of such policy, addresses common concerns, and provides information about relevant resources that schools can use. The manual includes sample resources such as a presentation for those developing policy, a school policy template, and statements to the school community about dealing with incidents related to substance use or gambling.
