admissions.biclinic@aadac.gov.ab.ca The Cocaine Program is an extended 12-step residential treatment program designed to address the unique aspects of cocaine addiction. The program is an additional component to the Business & Industry Clinic's 30-day Alcohol and Drug Program.

The 50-day Cocaine Program includes on-site detoxification, pretreatment preparation, a 12-step recovery program, a four-day family program and a seven-month follow-up program. The program teaches coping skills and provides motivation for abstinence, along with techniques to manage the effects of addiction, improve interpersonal skills and reinforce social supports. Cocaine-specific programming focuses on relapse prevention through lifestyle modification and information on the effects of extended cocaine use.

Phases of the Cocaine Program

Detoxification (2 to 7 days)

All clients of the Cocaine Program require a minimum two-day stay in the detoxification unit at the Northern Addictions Centre. Registered nurses and client care assistants are on staff 24 hours a day, and a doctor is retained on contract. During this stabilization period, clients receive individual assessment, basic information and education, and an introduction to the 12-step recovery process and community-based self-help groups.

Pretreatment Preparation (4 days, cocaine-specific)

This first phase of cocaine-specific programming gives clients an overview of recovery and helps them find their motivation to quit cocaine. Through lectures, videos, handouts and discussions, clients learn to get the most out of group therapy and to apply the theory of the stages of recovery to their lives. Clients also attend workshops on identifying and coping with their cocaine obsessions, and begin keeping a daily record of their cocaine cravings. In addition, clients continue to participate in detoxification programs and attend self-help meetings every evening (as determined appropriate by counsellors).

Treatment and Recovery Program (28 days)

During this phase, clients learn about recovery using the 12-step approach, which is abstinence-oriented and treats chemical dependency as a disease. The program features individual and group counselling sessions to help clients recognize thought processes and unhealthy behaviours that contribute to chemical dependency. Addictions-related topics include anger management, grief and loss, personal defense mechanisms, lifestyle decisions, relapse prevention, aftercare planning and workplace re-entry.

Relapse Prevention (16 days, cocaine-specific)

This last phase of specialized cocaine treatment components include group sessions that focus on quitting cocaine and maintaining recovery. Daily sessions deal with particular themes.

  • Triggers, cravings and urges: Clients keep a daily record of their cocaine cravings and analyze their use habits to learn more about cocaine triggers and how to cope with cravings and urges while assessing reasons to quit.
  • Coping skills: Clients learn about the goals of recovery and gain drug refusal skills to help deal with cocaine cravings.
  • Problem solving: Workshops help clients to counter addictive thinking by applying self-management skills.
  • Life skills: Through assertiveness training, clients explore thoughts and feelings that can lead to relapse, while learning to manage time and money.
  • Relationships: Clients learn intimacy, as well as patterns and techniques of effective communication.

Family Program (4 days)

This program helps family members aged 14 and older to better understand addictions and to learn how alcohol and other drugs can affect families and individuals. Participation allows family members to start their own healing process and become involved in their own recovery.

Follow-Up Program (7 months)

During this post-treatment program, counsellors assist clients on a weekly basis with aftercare plans and relapse prevention strategies while maintaining critical links to referral agents, employers and community resources.
