The Alberta Spit Tobacco Program (ASTEP) is a partnership between AADAC and the following organizations.
- National (U.S.) Spit Tobacco Education Program (NSTEP)
- Alberta's Regional Health Authorities
- University of Alberta Dental School
- Alberta Cancer Board
- Alberta Dental Hygienists Association
ASTEP focuses on youth prevention and targets areas of high use, including rural communities, and sports such as hockey and rodeo.
Program goals
- Raise the profile of spit tobacco use as a health issue in Alberta
- Increase awareness about the harms associated with spit tobacco use
- Remove the positive association of spit tobacco use with sport - especially rodeo and hockey
- Increase the ability of oral health professionals and others to address spit tobacco use
